Cascabel Group

General information on The Cascabel Group, Structures 200 and 204

The Cascabel Group, also referred to in the past as Picoleros (Dahlin 1984), is located on the west side of the El Mirador archaeological site, or more precisely, just north of the Leon Complex and northeast of El Tigre Complex. It is an architectural complex built on a five meter high platform. The buildings constructed on the platform reach a height of 15 to 25 meters, with tall pyramidal structures that were named with sequential numbers by Ian Graham in 1962. The tallest structures are structures 200, 204, 208 and 211. The last three have an east-west alignment.

This group contains many smaller structures that were included in the archaeological map over the past field seasons, taking into account that the original plans drawn up by Graham and Dahlin did not include this compound.

It was initially investigated and consolidated by Richard Hansen and Enrique Monterroso Tun during the 2003 field season. Thanks to the excavations carried out thus far, today we know that the building is composed of several bodies and an upper segment.

In contrast, structures 200 and 204, the latter being the main building located on the east end of the row of adjacent older structures in the south of the platform, was not previously investigated. Excavation was started early during the 2006 field season and it has not as of yet been finalized.

Structure 200 is located northwest of Structure 204 and represents a building seemingly independent from the others in this group. It has a truncated pyramid and has dimensions of 35 meters (on its north-south axis) and 30 meters (on its east-west axis) and a height of 20 meters on the south side while the height on the north side reaches an altitude of 35 meters . The structure built at the extreme west of the entire group is connected to both the Great Plaza with its staircase and with other buildings of the group. Due of the structure's location on the west side of the sacbe (or white road), archaeologists assume that this structure was very important in the past.

Based on the evidence of pottery collected in this group during previous excavations, the structure was dated back to the Proto Classic and Early Classic periods. However, the interpretation of the data collected from the coated floors of the inferior parts of both buildings seems to support that these buildings' earlier construction phases may be dated back to the Late Pre Classic period.
