The acropolis or pyramidal base also known as La Pava is located at the southern end of the first platform in the architectural Complex named La Danta. This base has no structural autonomy as it forms an important part of the Danta Complex, additionally leveling the bases which top off the main temple of La Danta (Suyuc 2007). Another characteristic shared by La Pava and La Danta is the fact that they share the same construction style that dates back to the Late Pre Classic period.

The great scientific dilemma concerning El Mirador is whether or not La Danta was constructed over a platform beginning from the base of the pyramid towards the top or if it was built on a hill top, that is to say if it's completely filled or if the Maya took advantage of the mountainous formation over which this extraordinary pyramidal complex may be built. To analyze this advanced technology has been used to scan the insides of the building. However, some of the masks located in La Pava, in the Danta Complex, seem to give us some clues.

The Maya built three more buildings on the second platform, which are arranged in the typical triadic pattern, with the main structure building 2A6-3 in the extreme south with its façade facing the north, as well as two smaller structures on the side. Interestingly, the structure on the east side is obviously not directed completely toward the east, but probably towards the southeast. Future research could reveal important data regarding the orientation. |
The first platform of the architectural complex La Danta is a closed plaza with extensions to the east. Within the plaza are several important buildings that haven’t yet been excavated. On the east and west sides, for instance, two structures were built for astronomical observation purposes, a palatial building can be found due north and the Acropolis of La Pava was elevated on the south side.

“All of the rocks that are here that belonged to the other masks, all of them have traces that show that they were carved from the mother rock,” Edgar Suyuc, Co-Director of the Mirador Basin Archaeological Project told Miradorpark.com in July of 2006, “…La Pava is all of the first level of the acropolis belonging to La Danta Complex and the second level located above it is just starting to be investigated as well this season.”
La Pava, also known as 2A6-1, is characterized by a pyramidal construction approximately 32 meters high with an access from the north façade. The base covers an area of approximately 6,500 mts2. It has two platforms with stairs on which several buildings were built forming a triadic pattern.
Preserved remains of the five buildings were found on the base’s first platform (20 meters high), and the extension of the platform due south was recorded as well, which reproduces the style of the triadic pattern with the two buildings located at the east and west ends, which were badly damaged and few details on the buildings were preserved. In the far north, east and west sides of the main staircase, there are two structures that give the impression of belonging to a later constructive phase. |
